Your best management fees to invest in index funds because they have little or not at all. Choosing the right depends on your style and your risk tolerance. The spy and IWM are good indicators that track the S & P and Russell 2000.

This is not an easy question, but if you are new to her: "Mutual Funds for Dummies" is a book about a generous introductory pros and cons of mutual funds. Whatever you do, you remain idle funds.

Most funds are diversified, making them safer than buying shares of a company. You will probably be safe with almost all mutual funds, but make sure it does not make much of a single class of shares. Invested in 2001, too many people in technology stocks, because he had made large profits for a few years. Then, suddenly, he fell because it had more value. Get a well rounded, with different types - utilities are a good insurance policy.

It is wonderful that you recognize that you need more information before they invest. I am in favor of index funds, actively managed funds. Apparently, the two most important factors for the success of a diversified portfolio and low cost are have. Index funds can never perform better, or should be involved in the background. Seems boring, but the investment is not gambling, it should be exciting. Get your excitement elsewhere.
I suggest you read the guide to investment Boglehead. A good book for beginners. It is based on the philosophy of John Bogle's - and founded the Vanguard index funds on.

It will help to avoid confusion and the bull in the media. See also the website - read the answers to others or ask your own - they are very friendly to new investors.
